In Gujarat, every marriage solemnised in the state is required to be registered under the Gujarat Registration of Marriages Act, 2006, whatever the religion of the couple. Registration is what gives you the government marriage certificate — the document you will need for a passport, visa, spouse's name change, insurance nominations and bank accounts.
Who this is for
- Couples married by Hindu rites (saptapadi) at home, a temple, a hall or an Arya Samaj mandir.
- Couples married by other religious or customary ceremonies in Gujarat.
- Couples who married years ago but never registered (late registration).
How registration works
- Memorandum of marriage in the prescribed form, signed by both partners.
- Supporting documents — age and identity proofs, address proof, photographs, proof of the ceremony (invitation card and wedding photographs), affidavits and witness IDs.
- Submission to the Registrar of Marriages with jurisdiction — in Ahmedabad city this is generally handled through the municipal corporation's registration offices; in rural areas, through the local registrar.
- Verification — under the 2026 amendments to Gujarat's registration rules, the process includes declarations about parents and a verification/waiting period before the certificate is issued.
- Certificate issued by the Registrar.
2026 changes to Gujarat marriage registration
Gujarat amended its marriage registration rules in 2026. As reported, couples are now asked to state whether their parents have been informed and to give parents' contact details; the registrar notifies parents; and registration is completed only after a waiting period. These rules have been publicly criticised and may be challenged in court, so the exact practice can change. We keep track of how the registrar's offices are applying them and will tell you what to expect for your application. Read our explainer.
Our role
We prepare the memorandum and affidavits, check that names and dates match across every document and photograph, book the appointment, accompany you to the office and follow up until the certificate is issued.
Frequently asked questions
Is marriage registration compulsory in Gujarat?
Yes. The Gujarat Registration of Marriages Act, 2006 requires marriages solemnised in Gujarat to be registered. Late registration is possible but may involve additional fees and paperwork.
Is an Arya Samaj certificate enough?
No. A certificate from an Arya Samaj mandir records the ceremony, but it is not a government marriage certificate. You should register the marriage with the Registrar to get an official certificate.
Can we register a marriage that happened years ago?
Yes. Late registration is allowed. You will need proof of the marriage (photographs, invitation, affidavits) and, in some cases, additional affidavits explaining the delay.
