An Arya Samaj marriage is a short Vedic ceremony — havan, saptapadi and vows — performed at an Arya Samaj mandir. It is a popular choice for couples who want a religious ceremony without a large wedding. The ceremony itself takes an hour or two.
The legal position
An Arya Samaj marriage between two Hindus (including Buddhists, Jains and Sikhs) is a marriage under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, and the Arya Marriage Validation Act, 1937 confirms that such marriages are not invalid merely because the partners belonged to different castes. However, the certificate issued by the mandir is not a government marriage certificate. Courts have repeatedly reminded couples of this. To have an official certificate, the marriage must be registered with the Registrar of Marriages.
Inter-religion couples
An Arya Samaj ceremony requires both partners to be Hindu. Where one partner belongs to another religion, mandirs often perform a conversion (shuddhi) first. In Gujarat, conversion is regulated by the Gujarat Freedom of Religion Act, 2003, which requires prior permission from the District Magistrate; a conversion without following that law can expose the couple and the officiating priest to legal trouble. For most inter-religion couples, the Special Marriage Act is the safer route — no conversion, no ceremony required.
