Surat has a large working population from across India, and many couples there are from different states, castes or religions. The Special Marriage Act works for all of them.
Points Surat couples often miss
- Residence proof: if you moved to Surat for work, your Aadhaar may still show your home-state address. You will need other proof — rent agreement, employer letter or utility bill — showing at least 30 days' residence.
- Notice in your home district: if a partner's permanent address is in another district, a copy of the notice is sent there. Plan for this if confidentiality matters to you.
- Witnesses: three witnesses must attend on the marriage day with ID — arrange them early.
We advise Surat couples by phone and WhatsApp and help them file with the correct office. If one partner lives in Ahmedabad, filing here may be an option.
