Gandhinagar is a separate district from Ahmedabad, which matters for court marriage. Under the Special Marriage Act, the notice must be given to the Marriage Officer of the district where at least one partner has lived for the 30 days before the notice.
Which district should you file in?
- If either of you has lived in Gandhinagar district for the last 30 days, you can file in Gandhinagar.
- If one partner lives in Gandhinagar and the other in Ahmedabad, you can choose either district — whichever is more convenient and where your address proof is strongest.
- Students and employees living in Gandhinagar on rent should carry a rent agreement or other proof showing at least 30 days' stay.
