How to update your surname after marriage using your marriage certificate — and when a Gazette notification helps.
Changing your surname after marriage is optional. If you choose to, your marriage certificate is the key document. Here is the usual order to follow.
1. Get your marriage certificate first
A government marriage certificate (from the Marriage Officer or Registrar) is accepted as proof of name change by most authorities. A mandir certificate alone usually is not. See marriage certificate services.
2. Aadhaar
Update the name at an Aadhaar enrolment or update centre with the marriage certificate as supporting proof. Check the UIDAI website for the current list of accepted documents and any limits on the number of name updates.
3. PAN
Apply for correction of PAN details online through the official PAN service portals, uploading the marriage certificate.
4. Passport
Apply through Passport Seva for a reissue with change in personal particulars. The marriage certificate is generally accepted; some cases may ask for additional documents such as an annexure or a joint photograph.
5. Banks, employer and insurance
Once Aadhaar and PAN show the new name, banks and insurers can update records using those documents and the marriage certificate.
When is a Gazette notification useful?
If you are changing more than just the surname (for example your first name too), or if an authority insists on it, a notification in the Official Gazette is the strongest proof of a name change. We can guide you through the affidavit, newspaper advertisement and Gazette application.
